The phrase does not mean that writers should describe every action, emotion, setting, and conversation in painstaking detail. Instead, it encourages writers to recognize when readers will benefit from experiencing an important moment rather than simply being informed that it happened<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Telling communicates information directly. Showing uses action, dialogue, sensory detail, body language, and other elements of a scene to allow readers to interpret and experience what is happening for themselves.<\/p>\n Both techniques belong in a writer\u2019s toolbox. The skill lies in knowing when a moment deserves to be dramatized and when it should simply be conveyed efficiently.<\/p>\n One of the most common opportunities for showing occurs when writers describe a character\u2019s emotions. It is easy to tell readers that someone is angry, frightened, embarrassed, or heartbroken, but naming the emotion does not always allow readers to feel it.<\/p>\n Consider this simple example:<\/p>\n Telling:<\/strong> \u201cSteve was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n Showing:<\/strong> \u201cSteve balled up his fists and tried to keep himself from striking something.\u201d<\/p>\n The second version never uses the word angry<\/em>. We hear Steve\u2019s words, notice his restraint, and understand that something about what has been said carries emotional weight.<\/p>\n Dialogue becomes especially valuable when what a character says and what a character feels are not exactly the same. A character can insist that everything is fine while the surrounding scene makes it obvious that nothing is fine at all.<\/p>\n That difference creates subtext<\/strong>, which allows readers to understand more than the characters explicitly say. Often, the most compelling dialogue is not the line that explains the emotion but the line that forces the reader to recognize it.<\/p>\n Exposition gives readers information they need to understand the story. Writers use it to explain history, relationships, circumstances, settings, and events that occurred before the current scene.<\/p>\n Some exposition is necessary. Most novels do not begin at the moment their protagonist is born, so writers inevitably have to provide information about what happened before page one.<\/p>\n The problem arises when important emotional material is reduced to explanation that readers might have experienced more powerfully through a scene.<\/p>\n Tell:<\/strong> Steve was angry with his father for abandoning him when he was young.<\/p>\n Show:<\/strong> \u201cYour dad called. You should call him back,\u201d said Steve\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat dad?\u201d Steve scoffed.<\/p>\n The second approach leaves room for the reader. We understand resentment, estrangement, and perhaps years of hurt without the narrator having to explain each feeling.<\/p>\n That does not mean every childhood memory needs a flashback or every relationship requires a scene explaining its history. Use dramatization when the past is emotionally important to what is happening now; summarize when the information is necessary but does not deserve that much narrative space.<\/p>\n A useful way to decide whether to show or tell is to ask what the scene gains from dramatization. Showing works best when the reader receives something beyond the basic fact of what happened.<\/p>\n A well-chosen detail might reveal character, establish mood, create tension, expose a contradiction, or allow the reader to draw a conclusion independently. If expanding a sentence into a full scene does none of those things, telling may actually be the stronger choice.<\/p>\n For example, a novel probably does not need to dramatize every breakfast, car ride, shower, or trip across town. \u201cShe drove to work\u201d may be exactly enough if nothing meaningful happens during the drive.<\/p>\n If that same drive is when she realizes someone has been following her for three miles, however, the moment probably deserves a scene. The narrative significance, not an arbitrary writing rule, should determine how much space it receives.<\/p>\n Good fiction needs compression as much as dramatization. If writers showed every moment in real time, even relatively simple stories could become enormous.<\/p>\n Telling can efficiently move readers across periods of time, summarize repetitive events, provide necessary background, or connect two scenes. It can also control pacing by moving quickly through less important material so the story can slow down where readers most need to pay attention.<\/p>\n \u00a0Show, don\u2019t tell does not apply in every situation, and sometimes a few lines of exposition are exactly what a story needs. Therefore, show what readers need to experience; tell what they simply need to know<\/strong>. That gives the writer considerably more flexibility than trying to eliminate telling altogether.<\/p>\n Writers often recognize excessive telling more easily during revision than while drafting. Once the story exists, you can examine important moments and decide whether readers are being allowed to experience enough of them.<\/p>\n During your revision, look for places where you have simply named an emotion, summarized an important confrontation, explained a relationship that might be more powerful in action, or rushed through a moment that should carry emotional weight. Those are invitations to consider showing more, although not every one of them requires a change.<\/p>\n You can also ask whether the manuscript contains the opposite problem. If every minor action receives elaborate description, readers may have difficulty distinguishing important scenes from ordinary transitions.<\/p>\n Good narrative pacing depends on contrast. Some moments deserve a spotlight, while others need only enough illumination to lead us to the next important scene.<\/p>\n Ultimately, \u201cshow, don\u2019t tell\u201d is less about description than it is about trust<\/strong>. Showing gives readers evidence and allows them to participate in understanding the character, emotion, or conflict.<\/p>\n Instead of announcing that a marriage is failing, a writer might let us notice that two people eat dinner without looking at each other. Instead of telling us that a child desperately wants her father\u2019s approval, the writer might show her checking the bleachers before every game to see whether he arrived.<\/p>\n Readers enjoy making those connections. When writers provide the right details without explaining every implication, stories gain depth because readers become active participants in creating meaning.<\/p>\n That is why \u201cshow, don\u2019t tell\u201d remains useful advice, even though it was never meant to be absolute.
